Static was formed in the early 90's when Dial 911 invaded Cooksey's office at SSI while Cooksey was having a MIDI hair tearing session on his interactive soundtrack for Darksun-Shattered Lands. Dial claimed he could help with some complicated interactive MIDI programming and lo and behold he did! A collaboration was started that resulted in the second Darksun soundtrack Darksun - Wake of the Ravager in which Cooksey was composer, guitarist, drummer and keyboard player and Dial was the bassist.

The two of them then branched out into pop music and formed Static in 1994. Static was named by "Cal" at Cal’s BBQ in Sunnyvale who was amused by a story about the sound designers putting static into a mock radio show to give it the WW2 sound. Henceforth, when Dial and Cooksey would arrive for lunch, he would loudly announce to the restaurant "STATIC!!!". As one should never ignore the hand of fate the name was adopted and Cooksey and Dial 911 started operating their early web site and band under that name.

In 1999 the Stikman joined Static and brought his lyrical talents to the table, he has penned lyrics that tell The Stikman's sordid stories with a theatrical flourish. The songs are tragi-comical, about life, love, sex and the human (and not-so-human) condition.
Cooksey is the spiritual leader and founder of the Static cult. He has created audio art and code for over 100 video game titles. Cooksey has done music ranging from 60 piece choral/orchestral arrangements to down and dirty punk rock musings.

His musical education started in Michigan in the 60's working for Motown/Rare Earth Records with the band Magic. He studied in the Bay Area from Mr. D and Ed Kelly at Laney College. Cooksey has been an active musician and bandleader for over 20 years.

Cooks has a very distinctive style as an instrumental soloist producing sensuous liquid tones from the guitar that are matched by few players, his instrumental and compositional styles coupled with his twisted and wry sense of humor make him everyone’s favorite pencil neck guitarist.

The Stikman, born The Mark Pstikman in Brooklyn NY, was imprisoned without option for twelve years in the Poughkeepsie NY school system. Although bleak, Po'Town was where young Stikie began drawing, painting and sculpting sound and playing harmonica for legendary Texas-Blues guitar stylist, T-Bone Walker.

After studying art and music at several colleges, including the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he shared musical hallucinations with Rashan Roland Kirk and others, a vision beckoned: The Stikman drifted his way to the San Francisco Bay Area....

The Stikman formed Polymorph Productions a partnership with Dan Rathbun of Idiot Flesh/Sleepy Time Gorilla Museam and Rance Mannion, with whom he built Polymorph Recording Studios in Oakland.

Ron Calonje aka Dial 911 is the minister of low-end amusement on the bass and purveyor of rhythms on a variety of acoustic and electronic stand up percussion instruments.

Ron has played bass and percussion for over 20 years and brings a unique perspective and attitude to Static.

He can often be found wandering between 6th St. and Maiden Lane wondering how he went from fully employed to unemployable in a space of only 6 months.

Pssst... buddy have you got a dime ?
